By Carol Fontaine
“A collection of illustrated quotations―astute, profound, witty, and sweet―on the magic of books. Whether you were devoted to reading as a child or have discovered a new love for books as an adult, Why We Read, Quotations for Book Lovers, illustrated by Ellen Surrey, reminds us what a power and privilege it is to read.” Amazon. This book is available from the Library of Congress’ The Library Store. I invite you to consider these insightful quotes by three authors on the power of literature.
“Reading is the sole means by which we slip, involuntarily, often helplessly, into another’s skin, another’s voice, another’s soul.” Joyce Carol Oates
“That is part of the beauty of all literature. You discover that your longings are universal longings, that you’re not lonely and isolated from anyone. You belong.” F. Scott Fitzgerald
“I think of reading a book as no less an experience than travelling or falling in love.” Jorge Luis Borges
Library Happenings
Andes Public Library is excited to offer Crafters Meet-Up, an opportunity for folks who like to create, whether it be by knitting, crocheting, writing, drawing, painting, jewelry making, anything! Sessions are scheduled for Mondays from 2:30-3:45pm, beginning January 27. This can be a time of camaraderie, laughter, sharing ideas and techniques, getting feedback on your works from friends, and keeping up with local news. We are happy to offer coffee and tea. If you are interested, please email Carol at an.ill@4cls.org. We look forward to hearing from you!
Andes Library associate and author, Tami Jaegel, will write a monthly blog on our new website titled “Did You Know?” Her first topic is about the Shavertown Bridge spanning the Pepacton Reservoir. We look forward to learning more from Tami’s research about Andes. If you haven’t yet read Tami’s novel, Pepacton, come check out a copy from our library.
Students from the Andes Central School Crop Program have been busy at the library. For example, the Grade 5-8 group is designing chairs as works of art. Students looked at examples of chairs from many different sources, such as ceremonial chairs from the Huichol people of Mexico, European thrones, chairs designed by the Spanish architect, Antonio Gaudi, and a collection of chairs created by the American artist, Lucas Samaras. We look forward to our students’ creations!~
