CHAIR YOGA: TRANSFORMATIVE BENEFITS FOR MIND AND BODY – February 2025

By William Duke

Having just started a chair yoga program a year ago at Streamside Yoga I’ve found there is growing interest in the practice.

Chair yoga offers a gentle and accessible way to improve physical and mental well-being. Whether you’re new to yoga or seeking a low-impact practice, chair yoga is perfect for all ages and abilities.

Chair yoga modifies traditional yoga poses using a chair for support, making it ideal for seniors, those with mobility challenges or anyone looking for a gentler practice. It’s an effective way to improve flexibility, strength, and balance while being easy on the body.

Physical Benefits

  • Improves Flexibility: Stretch muscles and increase joint mobility for easier daily movement.
  • Builds Strength: Tone muscles and support better posture.
  • Enhances Balance: Strengthen core stability and reduce fall risks.
  • Reduces Pain: Alleviate chronic pain and stiffness through gentle movement.
  • Boosts Circulation: Promote cardiovascular health with slow, deliberate motions.

Mental and Emotional Benefits

  • Reduces Stress: Calm the nervous system with mindful breathing and movements.
  • Improves Focus: Clear your mind and boost cognitive function.
  • Promotes Positivity: Foster self-compassion and emotional well-being.
  • Builds Connection: Meet like-minded individuals in a supportive setting.

Classes are scheduled from 3-3:45 pm on Mondays and Thursdays at Streamside Yoga, a serene and peaceful setting at 506 Main Street right here in Andes. Each class includes gentle breathing exercises, both seated and standing poses using the chair, and concludes with savasana relaxation. No special equipment is needed—just wear comfortable clothing and bring a willingness to try something new. Chairs and props are provided. For more information call 917-859-5397.~
