Lots of Valentine’s Day love was shown at our February Spirit Meet!  The event was marked by our Pre-K students singing a song about February; our K/1 class using ASL, recited and signed the Pledge of Allegiance along with singing and signing“ You’re a Grand Old Flag.” They also sang a Chinese Celebration Song for the Chinese New Year. The 2nd and 3rd grade class handed out Valentines to all students and teachers and through their music class, they sang a Civil Rights Freedom Song Medley; an original poem was read by a 3rd grade student, Thalia Jeanniton; The 6th grade shared a “Word of the Month,” as well as nine interesting facts about the heart.  Our upper-grade students shared “This Month in History” facts for everyone’s enjoyment.

Students and faculty alike have been enjoying the snowy winter days, and “Ski Fridays” remain a well-loved tradition at Andes Central School. Our 4 year olds have shown tremendous progress, and our upper-grade students are a great help to the younger students learning to ski and snowboard.  Plattekill Mountain covered in snow is a pleasure to experience. The beauty of the Catskill region is not lost on even the youngest members of our school family. We are working on getting our very own ACS Ski Team off the ground for next season…Stay tuned!

The Catskill Mountain Shakespeare Company will be bringing a touring production of The Tempest to Andes CSD in April. The program is designed for middle and high school student audiences.  The students look forward to this exciting and educational introduction to one of Shakespeare’s most beloved plays.

We are pleased to announce our newest staff member: Jenna Christine Weaver, School Nurse.  Jenna graduated ACS in 2010. Since then she pursued her nursing degree and is also the mother of four children. Two of her children are currently students at ACS. Jenna reports: “It is an absolute honor and privilege to be back and join the team as School Nurse.” Everyone at Andes is happy to have her with us. Welcome, Jenna!

ACS Junior, Emma Robson, and the National Honors Society are working on a backpack program through Delaware Opportunities in support of our school community. This program represents a leadership initiative that lends itself to the service requirement of our NHS society.  The students are working hard to help those who would benefit most from their efforts.

This month we will launch ACS’s participation in MySchoolBucks, a web-based platform that, for a small fee, will help our families pay for and track their child’s school meals securely online or through a phone app. Parents and guardians will be able to view cafeteria purchases, and access meal balances and snack purchases with ease. Any families with questions can contact us at school. As always, those families who receive lunch program support will continue to do so. This platform will make the process of tracking school lunches much easier for our cafeteria staff as well as for our families! I have used it in the past on the parent end of things, and it is a game-changer for tracking and keeping up with school lunch purchases.

Andes CSD will be holding a Talent Show on March 26th at 6 pm. All members of the community at large are invited to attend. Come out and see some of the unique talents possessed by the students at Andes Central School!

Upcoming dates:  Spring Break:  No school on March 29th, Good Friday, with Spring Break to follow during the first week in April.  Our next school Spirit Meet is scheduled for March 13th. There will be a Board of education meeting on March 21st at 7 pm in the Distance Learning Lab.
