THE BIG ANDES HOEDOWN – July 2023

By Becca Wintle

Dust off your dancing shoes! Andes is hosting a community fundraising square dance on Saturday July 8th, 5:30 pm till late at the Fire Department pavilion. Everyone is invited; come and dance outside in the beautiful Catskills to the sound of traditional old-time fiddle music.

Following the strong local tradition of community square dances in the area, this event will bring together old and young and will raise money for the Andes Food Pantry and Fire Department.

A stellar lineup of musicians from all over N.Y. State will gather to play for this dance, all steeped in the traditional sound of Appalachian string band music.

Don’t remember how to do-si-do or waltz (or never learned)? No problem! The caller (Nancy Spero from Ithaca NY) will walk you through the dances—which are fun for all ages—and then tell you when to do what. You don’t need to come with a partner and watchers/listeners are also welcome. The fire will be burning bright and there will be music until late in the night.

Entry fee will be a suggested donation of $10-20 and food by Ty’s Taco-ria will be available for purchase (though limited so get there early).
