  Tales & Tails Writing Contest: (Open May 1st – August 1st) Prizes Available!  Children (ages 5-12) Teens (ages 13-17) and Adult categories. Write an original fairy tale, folk tale, fable, or tall tale featuring an animal as one of the main characters.

THE WAY WE WERE - July 2021

There will be a Fourth of July celebration in Andes next Monday with the usual sports and ball game between Andes and Delhi. In the evening there will be special movies and a big dance.  [Jim Andrews: Andes routinely celebrated the Fourth in a big way with parades, ball games, community picnics and “the big dance.”]

SIXTY YEARS AGO IN ANDES - July 2021

   My father soon became friends with Bob Daily, who owned the Red Gate Pony Farm (which we affectionately renamed the “RG-Puff”). Bob had worked for years with horses, including thoroughbreds at the New York City race tracks, and he was soon giving me jumping lessons at the RG-Puff.  (These were not entirely successful, but I did learn to fall off a horse without severely hurting myself.)

A quick word on “shovel jumping.”  Most folks approach edging with the one-foot-on-the-shovel technique followed by the application of a forceful push or maybe even a quick stomp-like motion to force the shovel into the ground, or through the sod in the case of edging.
