MOUNTAINEER TRACKS –May 2021

By Dr. Robert L. Chakar, Jr., Superintendent

The Board of Education has been working diligently to prepare a school budget which will stay within the tax levy threshold for ACS of .79%. That said, the Board has proposed a tax levy increase of 0%, which is within the legal limit under a simple majority vote. The Board is also managing increases in mandated costs such as salaries and related costs.

The public hearing on the budget will take place at 7 pm on Thursday, May 6th in the Distance Learning classroom and voting on the budget and board of education member, as well as a proposition to purchase a new 30 passenger school bus, will take place on Tuesday, May 18th  from 2 pm – 8 pm in the school’s fitness center.

Our 4th graders did a project to learn about running a business. They decided to create the ACS 4th Grade Cookie Club, and sold cookies around the school. With lots of help from Laurie Day and the rest of our cafeteria staff, they baked, packaged and delivered cookies to everyone who purchased them. They raised $161.00 to donate to Heart of the Catskills. We’re very proud of them all!

April was Poetry Month. Every morning, a student or staff member read a poem of their choice over the PA system during announcement time. During the week of April 26th – 30th we celebrated by having a poetry dress-up week, with a different poetry theme each day.  Tuesday, April 29th was Poem in Your Pocket Day, where everyone had to carry a poem with them and share it with others throughout the day. We even had a PoeTREE in the entryway with many poems hanging from it. Students could choose from if they could not come up with their own poem.~
