MOUNTAINEER TRACKS – May 2017

By Robert L. Chakar, Jr., Ed.D., Superintendent

The Board of Education has been working diligently to prepare a school budget which will stay within the tax levy threshold of 1.76%. That said, the Board has proposed a tax levy increase of 1.76%, which is at the legal limit under a simple majority vote. We will continue to be efficient with our combined grades of pre-k and K, grades 1 & 2, and grades 5 & 6. The Board is also managing increases in mandated costs such as salaries and related costs.

The public hearing on the budget will take place at 7 pm on Thursday, May 4th in the Distance Learning classroom and voting on the budget and board of education member, as well as a proposition to purchase a new 28 passenger school bus, will take place on Tuesday, May 16th from 2 – 8 pm in the Fitness Room. Please note that the start time of the voting is different from previous years.

We would like to thank the Andes Presbyterian Church for the use of their building by our Drama Club for their production of Into the Woods. We appreciate their willingness to share their facility while our gymnasium is undergoing construction. The play was a success and the students enjoyed performing in a different venue. We are hopeful that we will return to full use of our gymnasium by the middle of May.

The Class of 2017 has worked hard over the last several years to raise money for their senior trip. During spring break, they were able go to Puerto Rico for a week, with chaperones Mr. & Mrs. Tom Little. They would like to thank everyone who has supported them over the years to help make this trip a reality.

The student body is also excited that their Junior Prom is scheduled for May 20th at Willow Drey Farms. Lastly, this year’s Open House will also be held on May 16th, the same date as the budget vote. Open House will be from 6:30 – 8 pm. There will also be a Pulled Pork BBQ dinner that night beginning at 4 pm to benefit the ACS Outdoor Club. You can eat in or take your dinner home to enjoy.~
