LIBRARY NOTES – June 2015

By Barbara Mellon

library-thumbnailMay was such a busy month at the library. How good it always is to see the “snow birds” return from parts South. While some share tales of wonderful libraries elsewhere, others bemoan long waiting lists for a book they’re dying to read, and are thrilled to find just that title sitting on our shelf.

The turnout for our annual Open House was wonderful. More than 50 people stopped by during the afternoon to sample the oh-so-tasty treats supplied by a tireless group of volunteers who seem to truly enjoy whipping things up in their kitchens. Cups of sweet punch were served as conversations ebbed and flowed, inside and out, and a bit of friendly rivalry grew as it got closer and closer to the drawing for our raffle. Karen and Mike Miller were the lucky winners who took home a brand new 47″ television. Congratulations to them and thanks to everyone who participated in the raffle, made donations to the library or shared the day with us. What a success!

And speaking of success . . . our showing of “The Judge,” starring Robert Duvall and Robert Downey, Jr. was not only well-attended but garnered plenty of praise for the movie and the actors. Selecting just the right film each month has become something of a challenge, as we pore over the list of titles covered by our license, researching the story lines and reviews for those that we think will fit our viewers. It is so satisfying when applause breaks out as the credits roll! Our next movie night will be on Thursday, June 11th at 7 pm.

At this writing, we are looking forward to our next fun-filled event, the “Party in the Park” at Ballantine Park (which will have been on May 24th), and the Garden Tour is scheduled for Saturday, June 20th, 11 to 4. Don’t miss this chance to view a number of beautiful Andes gardens, sure to inspire the gardener within you. Tickets are $10 per person and will be available at the library starting at 10 am on the 20th.   ~
