As a collaborative project between the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the Catskill Mountain Club, a new hiking trail within walking distance of the Shavertown Bridge Boat Launch at Pepacton Reservoir was opened to the public on August 30th. The new trail is among the first created on New York City-owned land in the watershed. After a brief ceremony to celebrate the opening of the trail, everyone was invited for a roughly 2-mile round-trip hike to a scenic overlook that features a beautiful view of Pepacton Reservoir. The full trail allows for a 5.3-mile round trip.
The trail opening emphasizes the DEP’s efforts to make more land in the watershed available for recreational use. It also highlights a new opportunity to enjoy both hiking and paddling near a reservoir and a partnership with an important regional outdoor group. The Catskill Mountain Club provides organized outdoor (non-motorized) activities throughout the Catskill region. ~
