SENIORS ON THE GO – August 2011

By Mary Tucker

The Andes Senior Club met at the Andes Fire Hall parking lot at 8:15am for our bus trip to The Beeches Conference Center and Inn in Rome, NY. We had a nice ride through rolling, green countryside and arrived with a half hour to get situated and find the places reserved for Andes. A buffet-style dinner started at noon, then the Chatham Theatre Company presented Fifteen Miles on the Erie Canal, a musical history in two acts, recalling the story of the planning and construction of the Erie Canal. Stories and songs of life on the canal were told and/or sung by two men who acted the parts of a “canawler” and a “lock tender.” A large movie screen was set up at the back of the stage where images of building the canal and life on the canal were shown. The show was interesting, informative and fun to watch. At 4:40 we boarded the bus, took a more direct route back and arrived in Andes at 7:30pm.

Our regular monthly meeting was scheduled to be a picnic meeting on the back lawn of the Andes Methodist Church. Because of the intense heat we met inside. Pastor Larry Dunlop, the new minister, was introduced to the club. The Margaretville Mobile Health Van was there for health assessments.

Thanks to Jane and Fred for arranging our trip. They will be checking to see what trips are available for September or October.
