THIS AND THAT AT THE THRIFT SHOP

By Mary Tucker

Since the Andes Thrift Shop opens in mid-June, Nora Cole and I have been spending many days from 10:20 am until noon getting ready for opening, sorting and putting out clothing and “stuff” that has been donated over the winter. There are plenty of clothes to choose from; some that have never been worn with tags still attached. Items that have been in the back room have been inspected, cleaned and put on the shelves to be sold. While doing this, we removed things that were on sale for several years. These will be sent to The Salvation Army store in Oneonta. Unsalable items went to the Andes Transfer Station.

There were boxes of books to be put on shelves, and while looking through them I found two very old cook books, The Cake Book, copyright 1965, with more than 300 home-tested cake recipes and the Sunday News Family Cookbook, copyright 1962, with recipes for every meal during the day, including appetizers, beverages, desserts, holiday recipes and foods from other lands.

I took the books home and on a rainy day read through the recipes. Some are quite interesting, like the one below from the “Rare, Historical and Offbeat Cakes” section of The Cake Book. ~
