SIGNS OF SPRING

By Mary V. Tucker

St. Patrick’s Day has come and gone, so has the Corned Beef and Cabbage. April Fools Day is here and Income Tax Day is close behind.  Each day I see more and more signs of spring.

Coming to Andes down Cabin Hill, trying to avoid the lumps across the road is like riding a roller coaster. Snow men have melted away and students walking down Main Street are wearing shorts.  They’ve put away boots, coats, hats and mittens. Snow banks along the street are getting smaller, making more parking available. I see sap buckets hanging from maple trees and smoke coming from sap houses. Seed catalogs are arriving in the mailbox, garlic bulbs are showing their green spikes,  driveway is muddy, muddy, muddy. It’s time to start seeds on the end of the kitchen table.  When we read that Phyllis is planning her garden….now that’s a sure sign of Spring being just around the corner!~
