When I studied forestry and surveying at the NYS Ranger School up in Wanakena in the Adirondacks back in 1960, forestry was about identifying tree species, felling trees, what trees to fell, and planting trees and how to care for them.

The morning of opening day emerged clear, cool with the threat of rain and snow in the afternoon. Undaunted, I packed my thermos of hot coffee, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and my bow and headed up the mountain to my favorite tree stand.

You might have observed two, my wife Nancy and our friend Ann Roberti of Dingle Hill, doing what they would like others to do, picking up accumulated trash along the Tremperskill Road filling large plastic bags. Hence the name “bag ladies”.
