The first “Cycle the Sky – Andes” bike ride, a fund-raiser for the Andes Food Bank, took place on June 7th. Riders came from many cycling clubs, from Brooklyn, and from Andes itself. With perfect weather, well-marked and scenic routes, and a yummy lunch served by the Andes Hotel, everyone had a great time. Ed Krantz provided SAG (support and gear) truck assistance as needed; Andes Food Bank volunteers provided refreshments; and the participants were a cheerful and athletic group. Organizer Tom Joyce reports that not only was $750 raised for the Food Bank, but also a nest-egg fund was established so that this can be a yearly event. Special thanks to Jim Suozzo, President of Delaware Operations, who backed this effort from the beginning.
With the end of the school year, the Healthy Snack Pack program is taking a short break. The program introduces a variety of nuts, seeds, cheese, eggs, fresh fruit and vegetables. One parent wrote, “I like that the snacks are of different varieties and that they are the kind that my child will try … whereas if he were to choose he may limit himself to what he actually snacks on.” During the summer, CROP participants at ACS will be receiving weekly snack packs. This effort is funded by community donations and the Cycle the Sky – Andes bike ride fund-raiser.
