MOUNTAINEER TRACKS — September 2013

ACS will open its doors to students for the 2013-14 school year on Thursday, September 5th.  Students and staff will return to see freshly painted rooms, shiny floors and the pitter-patter of students in our hallways. In addition, our maintenance staff installed a wall between our fitness center and the pre-k/K children’s classroom.  We have also installed a fence on our playground to prevent children from falling down the gradual bank onto the parking lot, and a new fire alarm system in the main building. This investment brings us up to the current code requirements.

We are also enthusiastic about re-distributing our laptops to our 7-12 grade students for their use throughout the school year.  The 2013-14 school year is the second year of our one-on-one laptop initiative that places technology in the students’ hands 24/7.  During the summer, faculty and community members also maintained our greenhouse that sits on the back field.  Lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers and other vegetables have been harvested throughout the summer.

We are eager to host our fifth annual “Evening of Excellence” on Thursday, October 3rd, to honor students who maintained an average of 90%+ during the entire 2012-13 school year. This is a wonderful evening of celebrating these students and their academic accomplishments from the previous school year. The Drama Club is planning to present its fall show on November 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Rehearsals will be starting very soon.  Please look for more information as we move closer to the production dates.  Our school has once again merged with South Kortright Central School for our fall soccer and boys basketball; all the students are doing very well with the transition. This year, Andes is hosting a golf team, which is merged with South Kortright Central School.

Lastly, school districts have been asked to assist in “getting the word out” that new legislation requires all homeowners receiving a Basic STAR exemption to register with the New York State Tax Department in order to receive the exemption in 2014 and subsequent years.  Homeowners will not have to register to receive this year’s 2013 STAR exemptions. This registration program is part of a new initiative to protect New Yorkers against the costs of inappropriate or fraudulent STAR exemptions.

In the upcoming weeks, more data will follow. In the meantime, for more information on the STAR Registration Program you can visit: on-line, STAR Registration Web page; email:  orpts.star@tax.ny.gov or call 518-474-2819.

We are looking forward to another successful school year at Andes Central School and hope to see you at many of the events hosted at the school this year.  Graduation for the Class of 2014 will be on Friday, June 27, 2014. ~
