Harking back to very olden times, the Middle Ages actually, people bought their food outdoors from trays, often at a country fair. John Schulman and Scott Finley came up with the name Two Old Tarts and did just that—sold their baked goods, especially the world’s most delicious chocolate orange tarts among other sinful desserts, from an outdoor booth at the Round Barn several years ago on Saturdays in Halcottsville where they were festively surrounded by flower and plant vendors, crafts people, and other food sellers. They were a stunning success. But Los Angeles called, and John and Scott answered, and thank goodness! They returned after five years. What to do then? Well, you know the answer to that, and the Two Old Tarts returned bigger and better than ever just around the corner from Andes on Main Street, Bovina.
First and foremost, TOT is a bakery selling the most delectable tarts in a myriad of flavors from chocolate almond, to apple walnut cream, to mile-high carrot cake unlike any other I have ever tasted. And more, so much more. And then on to cookies, almond croissants and galettes disingenuously called hand pies, all of which go great with a morning cup of coffee or afternoon tea, both offered in many different blends. Three or four breakfast and lunch specials that change daily are on hand as a preliminary to the confections. And if you have something special coming up like a wedding or party, or are throwing a terrific dinner for friends or relatives, or if you just want to indulge yourself, take home one of their special desserts. And don’t forget that Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s are virtually around the corner. The holidays one week in advance and check TwoOldTarts.com for offerings.
What does the future hold? Gift baskets, gift items, gift certificates and an expansion of their wholesale business are off to a good start with two area restaurants so far on board. Two Old Tarts is a year-round business and has plans to remain open six days a week, 8 am to 4 pm (they are closed Wednesday’s.) Most of all, John and Scott, who want everyone to feel welcome and comfortable, have been overwhelmed by the support of the local communities in Andes, Bovina and Delhi and are very appreciative of that support.
So come for the friendly atmosphere, the fascinating decor, and treat yourself to something special–a great bakery long needed and awaited in our part of the Catskills.~
